What Moves Natural Gas

  • US weather forecasts (3–7 day) — cold snaps drive heating demand and spike prices overnight
  • EIA Weekly Storage Report (Thursday, 8 PM IST) — draw vs injection vs 5-year average
  • Hurricane season (June–November) — Gulf of Mexico production disruptions
  • European LNG import demand — post-Russia sanctions, Europe competes with Asia for LNG cargoes
  • Henry Hub (US benchmark) — MCX NatGas follows Henry Hub via import parity
  • AI data centre electricity demand — structural new demand source from 2024 onward

Demand Drivers

  • Power generation — natural gas is the marginal fuel for electricity in the US and increasingly India
  • Winter heating demand (Northern Hemisphere — Nov–Feb is the peak demand season)
  • Industrial feedstock — fertiliser production (gas is the key input for urea)
  • LNG exports from US — high US export demand tightens domestic supply
  • AI data centre power — gas-fired power plants are being restarted in the US to power AI data centres
Risk Note
Natural gas is the most volatile commodity on MCX — daily moves of 5–10% are common. Prices swing on a single weather forecast update. Low margin (₹20–30K) amplifies leverage massively relative to capital. MCX NatGas tracks Henry Hub, not Indian city gas prices.

Who Controls Supply

Russia was Europe's dominant gas supplier (pre-2022); now LNG from US, Qatar, Australia fills the gap. The US is the world's largest natural gas producer. Qatar controls ~25% of global LNG trade. Russia's Gazprom still controls the pipelines to much of Eastern Europe. Australia is Asia's largest LNG exporter.
