What Moves Copper
- China economic data — PMI, property sector health, stimulus announcements
- LME warehouse stock levels — low inventory signals supply tightness
- Mine supply disruptions — strikes in Chile/Peru (frequent), floods, political instability
- AI and energy transition narrative — long-term structural demand story
- USD strength (inverse — copper priced in dollars on LME/COMEX)
- COMEX-LME basis — arbitrage between US and London markets creates price signals
Upcoming Events for Copper
Demand Drivers
- China construction and infrastructure (accounts for ~55% of global copper demand)
- Electric vehicles — each EV uses 83kg of copper vs 22kg in ICE cars
- Power grid buildout — renewable energy and grid upgrades are copper-intensive
- AI data centres — each hyperscale data centre uses thousands of tonnes of copper wiring
- Indian infrastructure (roads, rail, power) — growing demand centre
Risk Note
Copper's large lot size (2,500 kg, ~₹24L contract value) makes it high-capital. LME price is the global benchmark; COMEX is the US proxy. MCX follows COMEX with import duty overlay. Copper is called 'Dr. Copper' because it has the best track record of predicting global economic direction.

Who Controls Supply
Chile (25%) and Peru (11%) together control 36% of global mined copper supply. Congo (DRC) is rising fast. The Democratic Republic of Congo + Zambia control 70% of global cobalt (copper by-product). China controls 40% of global copper smelting/refining capacity — a chokepoint even when mines are elsewhere.
