Electricity Intelligence

No recent articles — check back after 9:30 AM IST when the daily brief publishes.

What Moves Electricity

  • IEX Day-Ahead Market (DAM) clearing price — the direct reference price the MCX contract cash-settles against
  • Coal supply and availability at thermal power plants
  • Monsoon strength — drives hydro generation output
  • Temperature extremes — heatwaves and cold snaps spike demand faster than supply can adjust
  • Renewable (solar/wind) output — high renewable generation can push prices down sharply during the day

Demand Drivers

  • Seasonal peak demand — summer air-conditioning load (Apr–Jun) and winter heating in the north
  • Industrial and commercial power consumption cycles
  • DISCOM (state power distribution company) short-term buying to cover shortfalls
  • Renewable generation variability — solar/wind output swings shift how much thermal/hydro power is needed
Risk Note
This is MCX's newest derivative (launched 2026) with a dual-regulator structure — SEBI regulates the MCX futures contract while CERC regulates the underlying IEX spot market — a still-untested split. Liquidity, while growing quickly, remains thinner than legacy MCX contracts like gold or crude.

Who Controls Supply

India's power supply is a mix of coal (largest share), hydro, nuclear, and rapidly growing renewables (solar, wind), coordinated by Grid-India (POSOCO) as the national grid operator. Unlike metals, there is no single dominant global producer — this is a domestic, grid-balancing market.

Tax Treatment

MCX Electricity futures are cash-settled only (no physical delivery). Expected to follow the same non-speculative business income treatment as other MCX commodity futures (CTT 0.01% on sell side), but this had not been separately confirmed for this newly launched contract type as of this writing — confirm with a tax advisor before relying on this for filing.
