Brent's $10.65 Premium Over WTI Is the Week's Real Signal — Crude Expiry Monday

A refinery-strike-driven seaborne supply premium pushed Brent to $109.69 while WTI lagged at $99.04 — and MCX Crude expires Monday into that wedge.

The catalyst

One number organises the whole week: Brent at $109.69 against WTI at $99.04 — a $10.65 differential, widened on Friday by Brent's +3.56% move versus WTI's +1.09%.

That split is the evidence. A demand-led oil rally lifts both benchmarks roughly together. A seaborne supply rally lifts Brent first, because Brent prices waterborne barrels exposed to shipping routes, export terminals and refinery outages, while WTI prices a landlocked US delivery point. When the gap widens by ~2.5 percentage points in a single session, the market is paying for risk of barrels not arriving, not for stronger consumption.

The supplied week explains why: Ukraine resumed attacks on Russian refineries with Zelenskyy declaring the energy ceasefire over, Iran's Hormuz posture stayed in the headlines with a geopolitical premium described as "locked in," and China's pull on Brazilian crude tightened the Atlantic basin. Three independent channels — refining capacity, chokepoint risk, and cargo reallocation — all push the same direction, and all of them hit Brent-linked barrels hardest.

This matters now because MCX Crude Oil expires Monday, 19 October. The complex is being asked to converge a WTI-referenced Indian contract at the exact moment the global premium is concentrated in the other benchmark.

What changed this week

Crude did the heavy lifting and nothing else confirmed it.

MCX Crude closed ₹9,572/bbl, +3.09% on Friday, after +1.82% and +1.53% sessions earlier in the week — a three-step repricing, not a single headline spike. Each of those moves was initially framed around rupee mechanics, but the rupee has since stopped cooperating with that story: USD/INR at 95.07, down 0.09%. The rupee is no longer amplifying. What's left in the INR barrel is almost entirely the dollar barrel.

Critically, the rest of the energy complex refused to follow. Henry Hub fell 3.68% to $3.12, and MCX Natural Gas sat flat at ₹298.5 (-0.03%) after a week of 2–3.5% declines attributed to storage surplus and mild weather. If this were a broad energy or inflation impulse, gas would not be bleeding. The divergence is the cleanest internal confirmation that the bid is supply-specific to crude, not macro-wide.
