RBI's Oct 7 MPC Is the One Catalyst That Touches Every MCX Contract
With USD/INR at 96.54 and MCX prices rising while COMEX benchmarks fall, next week's RBI decision is the common denominator across all nine contracts.

The catalyst
The RBI Monetary Policy Committee decision lands 7 October at 04:30 UTC (10:00 IST) — inside the Indian trading session, with MCX open. Of the eight scheduled events in the forward calendar, it is the only one tagged to all nine MCX contracts: gold, silver, crude, copper, natgas, zinc, aluminium, lead and nickel.
That tagging is not a formality. Every MCX contract is INR-denominated and benchmarked off a USD-quoted international reference. The repo decision and, more importantly, the accompanying signal on rupee management, move USD/INR — and a USD/INR move reprices the entire board mechanically, with zero change in the underlying dollar price. This is the rare event where the currency leg, not the commodity leg, is the dominant variable.
The setup going in is already currency-led. USD/INR closed at 96.54, up 0.43% from 96.13. Against the crosses, the rupee held: EUR/INR 109.10 (−0.25%), GBP/INR 127.65 (−0.10%), JPY/INR 61.265 (−0.08%). A rupee weaker against the dollar but firm against euro, sterling and yen is a dollar-strength signature, not an India-specific stress signature. That distinction matters for how the MPC is likely to be read.
What changed this week
The week's feed reads like a currency diary, not a commodity one. Headlines ran from "MCX Crude rallies 1.55% as rupee weakness resurfaces" (1 Oct) to "MCX Crude Falls −2.46% as Rupee Strength Reverses Export Support" (29 Sep) to "MCX Natural Gas Falls 3.57% as Rupee Strength Weighs" (28 Sep) and "USD/INR Rebounds +0.46% Rupee Reversal Amid Portfolio Flows" (1 Oct), following "USD/INR weakens 0.23% on sustained FPI inflows" (30 Sep). Direction flipped twice in four sessions. The driver did not.
The snapshot shows the same wedge. MCX Gold ₹147,724/10g (+1.10%) while COMEX Gold printed $4,162.3 (−0.95%). MCX Silver ₹225,545/kg (+0.82%) against COMEX Silver $60.42 (−0.51%). MCX Crude ₹9,008/bbl (+3.14%) against WTI $91.11 (−1.90%) and Brent $102.25 (−0.06%). MCX NatGas ₹288.1 (−0.76%) against Henry Hub $3.04 (+2.29%). Four contracts, four sign inversions versus their own benchmarks.
