MCX Crude edges higher on rupee stabilisation
WHAT HAPPENED MCX Crude climbed to 9113 INR/bbl at 11:36 pm IST, posting a +0.45% gain as USD/INR steadied at 94.94 INR (−0.16% vs prev close). The rupee's marginal consolidation has provided modest support to crude after a volatile session that saw the contract swing from a +2.33% intraday peak of 9893 INR/bbl at 03:42 pm IST to a −4.78% trough of 9462 INR/bbl at 06:14 pm IST. Natural gas meanwhile strengthened to 274.3 INR/mmBtu (+0.59%).
WHAT IT MEANS The late-session recovery reflects a pause in rupee depreciation pressure rather than fresh crude demand signals. For MCX futures traders, this consolidation near 9100 suggests the market is digesting the day's 431 INR (4.5%) intraday range. Softer precious metals—gold at 139433 INR/10g (−0.54%) and silver at 179699 INR/kg (−2.22%)—underline risk-off sentiment, keeping crude rebound potential capped.
WHAT TO WATCH The 9100 INR/bbl handle is the critical support now. A close below this level would retest the 9462 nadir and signal renewed rupee strength headwinds.
