MCX Gold slides -0.74% as rupee strengthens sharply

WHAT HAPPENED MCX Gold fell to 158480 INR/10g at 20:53 IST, extending a -0.74% pullback from the prior close. The decline accelerates a reversal from the 164604 INR/10g peak recorded at 18:59 IST. USD/INR surged +2.12% to 95.53 INR, pressuring rupee-denominated bullion while crude dipped -0.35% to 7869 INR/bbl and natural gas gained +0.86% to 280.7 INR/mmBtu. Silver mirrored modest weakness at -0.08% to 239450 INR/kg.

WHAT IT MEANS The rupee's sharp 2.12% appreciation is the dominant headwind, making gold costlier in domestic terms despite potential offshore strength. Traders face margin compression at this level after the intraday recovery arc stalled below 164600 INR/10g. The cross-asset picture—crude flat, natgas climbing—suggests selective risk-off into safe havens, but currency strength is overriding bullion demand.

WHAT TO WATCH The 158000 INR/10g support level. A hold here prevents a test of the 160362 INR/10g breakdown from the recent flash. Break below signals acceleration toward the 155000 zone.
