India Crossed 100 GW Solar — What It Means for MCX Silver

WHAT HAPPENED

India crossed 100 GW of installed solar capacity earlier this year — a milestone that took less than a decade from the first 10 GW. MNRE data for FY2026 shows India adding roughly 2-3 GW of solar capacity every month, with the pace accelerating under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Every gigawatt of solar panels installed consumes approximately 90-120 tonnes of silver in the form of silver paste used to print the electrical contacts on photovoltaic cells. At India's current build rate, domestic solar alone is absorbing 250-350 tonnes of silver annually — and climbing.

WHAT IT MEANS

Silver has two lives: a monetary asset (tracked against gold, USD, Treasury yields) and an industrial input (solar, electronics, EVs). Most MCX silver trading focuses on the monetary side — the gold-silver ratio, FOMC expectations, COMEX futures. The industrial demand from India's solar buildout is structurally different: it doesn't move with rupee depreciation or rate expectations. It moves with MNRE capacity addition targets and state-level DISCOMs' PPAs. India's National Solar Mission targets 280 GW by 2030. That's 180 GW still to be built — implying 16,000-21,000 tonnes of silver absorption over the next four years from India alone, at a time when global silver mine supply is growing at under 2% annually.

WHO IS AFFECTED

Jewellery traders, silverware manufacturers, and industrial importers all compete for the same silver supply entering India. Higher solar fabrication demand tightens the physical market, pushing domestic silver premiums above COMEX parity. MCX Silver at ₹2,20,365/kg reflects COMEX $59.28/oz translated through USD/INR ₹94.32 — but as domestic physical demand grows, the MCX-COMEX premium relationship will become a more persistent signal.

BOTTOM LINE

India's solar programme has converted the country from a silver buyer driven purely by jewellery and investment demand into a structural industrial consumer. This is a multi-year demand floor under MCX silver that most commodity analysis ignores because MNRE data isn't part of the standard commodity research workflow.

WHAT TO WATCH

MNRE publishes monthly capacity addition data around the 15th of each month. Track the GW/month run rate — if it sustains above 3 GW/month, India's silver absorption accelerates beyond current estimates. Also watch RBI import data: silver import volumes (tonnes, not rupee value) give the cleanest read on how fast domestic solar demand is pulling physical metal into the country.
